Year 10 writing Portfolio

Some writing I did in 2021 English

Is shylock a villain

What does the word ‘vindictive’ mean? Vindictive means when someone has a strong desire to seek revenge.

“When Antonio defaults on the loan, Shylock is vindictive, claiming he wants Antonio’s flesh for no practical reason other than spite.”

What is What is Anti-Semitism?

Anti-Semitism is discrimation towrads jews as rilgen and race.

What is one reason we should take pity on Shylock?

Because He is being treated badly because he is a jew and his daughter took all this money and ran away.

Sometimes a thing or an idea can be the antagonist in a story (we call this an abstract antagonist), rather than a person. For example corruption, jealousy, or disease. Based on the reading above, what is the thing/idea that could be considered the abstract antagonist in the Merchant of Venice?

Greed because throughout this story you can see that everyone wants something in this story.

Money because everyone wants it and not everyone can get it.

English essay

Essay Question: Describe at least one character or individual you could relate to in the text. Explain why it is important that you were able to relate to the character or individual.

“The secret life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber is a short story text the author intended for this text to show the way Walter mitty deals with his life in an adventurous way for the reader. This made Walter mitty relatable to me and the readers. This is because he was so bored he would imagine himself in interesting situations. Also not pay attention to his surroundings. This makes the text more interesting to read on a personal level.

This is shown in the story when Walter Mitty spaces out and does not pay attention Quote: “The Old Man’ll get us through,” they said to one another. “The Old Man ain’t afraid of Hell!” . . .

“Not so fast! You’re driving too fast!” said Mrs. Mitty. “What are you driving so fast for?” This means when he is imagining things he's unaware of his surroundings but also can be snapped back to reality. The author did this to make it more relatable to the reader. This made the reader feel closer to the text and more understanding rather than just reading a story. This happens to me when someone is speaking to me and I zone out and don't know what they're talking about.

Showing the reader an adventurous way of dealing with boredom. This makes the story more enjoyable for the reader of the text. This can be compared to this quote in the text: He picked up an old copy of Liberty and sank down into the chair. “Can Germany Conquer the World Through the Air?” Walter Mitty looked at the pictures of bombing planes and of ruined streets. . ..

“The cannonading has got the wind up in young Raleigh, sir,” said the sergeant.

This means Walter Mitty is boring, causing him to go off and imagine again but with the pictures in front of him. The author did this to bring the reader along on this adventure and make a vivid image of what was happening. This reminds me of picture puzzles ‘what do you see in the picture’ and using your imagination.

The final reason why it was important that I could relate to the character of Walter Mitty was that the character challenges the reader to question whether Mitty is doing the right thing by living in his head. This can be looked at in the text where “I don’t need overshoes,” said Mitty. ‘She put her mirror back into her bag. “We’ve been all through that,” she said, getting out of the car. “You’re not a young man any longer.” This means that Walter chose not to get but chose to space out instead showing the reader that he's not willing to do anything. This should make the reader think Walter is a relatable character but is he a good one. This idea is important because it shows two different views of a character.

In conclusion, an important character in the story was Walter mitty it was good that I could relate to this character for example when Walter Mitty spaces out and does not pay attention. An adventurous way of dealing with boredom. Mitty is doing the right thing by living in his head. I enjoyed this book because it got you thinking about the charter on what's right and wrong and your morals.

Happy broadcast ( What good things have been happening)

Hello and welcome to my blog today I will be sharing some stories from the happy broadcast.

(Dark chocolate) has shown that it can boost your mood in positive ways and can help people with bad anxiety. But other chocolates don't show the same effect like milk chocolate has no nutritional value and white chocolate is not truely a chocolate so the darker it is the better.

Studies have shown that if you

have cold showers in the morning it can make your immune system stronger and improve your energy levels. Cold showers can also help blood flow and make your heart pump blood more efficiently. Would you start doing this?

In Switzerland is the first city to make green rooftops mandatory for every new building. They did this for the benefits of climate change and this has worked out in their favor. This has lowered humidity so the building cool off faster. Also, 1 million square meters of green                                                                 roofs has been put down.

What one did you like the most?
If you enjoyed this you can go and check out the site.

short film

Hello and welcome to my blog in today's blog I am talking about the short film we made in English that has something to do with the merchant to Venice in the court scene and also using different technics.

The technics we used are birds-eye view, tilt, and panning.

Tilt was used to indicate confusion on the character.

Bird's eye view was used so the viewer understood more detail of the scene.

panning was used to track a character to show how they were running from the scene.

How this short film is retelling this scene is in the film the son asks for cod indicating a video game but the mother gives the son the fish cod. given what you exactly asked for this was shown in the merchant of Venice when shylock wanted his pound of flesh but he didn't ask for blood so he got exactly what he asked for.

what were some challenges in this project?

One of the challenges was finding the right placement for the scenes.

What would I do next time?

Nothing differently except using a better editing app.

What did we get from these challenges?

Success!!!!

Social studies The happy boradcast

Hello and welcome to my blog today's blog is about some good things about the environment on the site of the happy broadcast.

In 1994 California banned fishing nets the reason for this is a large percent of dolphins are get caught and killed in these nets.

What I think?

I feel like this would be good for the ocean to regain itself but fish companies will plum it so I think they can only fish with nets at a certain time of year.

The first human-compost funeral home in the US instead of cremating your body you can turn yours into healthy soil.

What I think?

I think it better because you don't have to pay for a coffin and it's better for the environment.

In South Africa, big cats are banned to be bread in captivity.

What I think?

I think  I better because the big cats would be able to bread better due to the environment.

Burger Compettion

Hello and welcome to my blog today's blog is about the burger competition we did in cooking with detail on the burger that we made.

Our burger

The theme of the burger is classic restaurant burger

Texture: It had a soft texture the only crunch it had is the lettuce.

The flavor: The mustard made a present in the burger and the chicken went well with the other contents of the burger to create a nice flavor.

The color: It had a lot of colors and the yellow pattie helped too.

Improvement

Could add more flavor and make the pattie more crunchy than soft.

Judges comment Too soft and very good color.

  1. How does color enhance the overall effect of your meals?

It makes your food look more appealing to look at so you would want to eat it more.

  1. How does texture affect the feel of the product as you eat it?

Depending on your texture it may make your food more enjoyable to eat or less enjoyable.

  1. Name two different ingredients you used to enhance the flavor of your meat pattie.

  2. We used mustard and chicken

  1. Why did you use these flavors? What did they do to your burger?

Because the chicken goes with mustard and it adds color.

  1. How does the way takeaway places advertise their products influence our decision in what we eat?

They try to make the product look the best and most appetizing to make us want it or feel like we need it.

  1. What are 2 safety measures that are important when storing and cooking red meat? _________

Don't cross-contaminate and make sure your meat is cooked properly because it can make you sick or wrap the meat tightly and in colder temperatures.

  1. What is something that you have enjoyed taking part in re the design processes we have done eg cupcakes, 4 way wraps, burgers

The one I enjoyed the most the 4-way wrap I feel like there was more freedom in choice and a better experience.

Help save the earth

Scientists engineer plastic-eating enzyme that could help fight pollution | News | DW | 16.04.2018

Read this save the planet

The problem we are facing today is plastic waste in the ocean all over the world plastic is washing up onshore and affecting the country's water supply and waterways. The cause of this is humans using so much plastic and not enough organic materials. The effect is most get caught in the currents of the ocean this means the is a great big waste patch in the ocean most of the plastic there has broken down into micro plastic which fish eat so could mean you have traces of plastic in the fish you eat.                            This is a problem because if we don't cut down on our plastic we might never be able to swim in the ocean again never eat or even have a healthy water supply. But the solution is to reuse the plastic bags you have. get metal drink bottles instead of plastic ones and reusable cutlery little things like that could go a long way and we can help save the earth.

class work this week

Hello and welcome to blog today's blog is about what we have been doing in wanaga.
We have been doing this assessment about wellbeing and how we can improve it and at the start of the period I would read my book. The book is called demon dentist is about this boy who hates going to the dentist and this woman came to their school to say they will have to go and then he gets all his teeth pulled out.
But that the most I have been up to.

social studies about plastic

Hello and welcome to my blog today's blog is about the research I have done in social studies about plastic in the ocean. I'll be showing my work by answering questions.

What people need to know about the great pacific garbage patch.

The GPGP is a big patch of garbage in the ocean that is collected by the current the size of this patch is 1.6 million square meters which is three times the size of France and twice the size of Texas.

What I think and what can we do

I think that this can become a bigger problem if we don't do anything about it and help the organizations that try to clean up this area.

What are scientists working on?

The scientists are tracking the trash to see how far and fast plastic travels through the ocean and where the plastic gets caught in the ocean/tide.

environment

Hello and welcome to my blog in today's blog I will be telling you some facts about the environment but instead of sad news I will be telling you some good news.

The first country that has banned deforestation is Norway for people who love to travel to green spaces this has helped quite a bit with climate change under deforestation.

A danish company made pencils that you can grow trees when your done using them the pencils are biodegradable and the seeds are inside the pencils.

Studies show if you live around greener spaces you live longer and less of a risk of death by 8-12% in the studies it had shown that the people that live in cities or places with lots of buildings have lived a shorter life.

Textile practical

Hello and welcome to my blog today's blog is about the screen painting we did in textiles.

For the practical, we had to make a design that covers the whole piece of paper and cut out the design. With a screen, you put your newspaper down and then your design on the card that has been cut as you can see in the photo.

Then add your paint and spread it across the sheet  like this

The end result should look like this

Thank you for reading my blog

If you did this activity tell me about it in the comments

and have a good day.

Science

Aim: To produce copper sulfate salt by reacting copper oxide with acid.

Equipment: Copper oxide powder, dilute (0.5 mol L-1) sulfuric acid, 50 mL measuring cylinder, two 100 mL beakers, bunsen burner, tripod, gauze mat, funnel, filter paper, thermometer, spatula, evaporating stirring rod.

Method:

1. Add 20 mL of sulfuric acid to a 100 mL beaker. Heat the acid until it reaches 70°C. Turn off your bunsen burner.

2. Once heated, use a spatula to add pea-sized portions of copper oxide to the beaker. stir the mixture for 30 seconds.

3. repeat step 2 until no more will dissolve. Allow the beaker to cool.

4. Fold the filter paper and place it in the funnel. Place the filter funnel into the second beaker.

5. Make sure the beaker is cool enough to hold at the top. The contents should still be hot. You may need your teacher to complete this step.

6. Gently swirl the contents of the beaker to mix, and then pour into the filter paper in the funnel. Allow to filter through.

7. Rinse the beaker you used to heat the mixture previously, and place it back on top of your tripod filled with 50-60 mL of water.

8. place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker and carefully pour some of the solutions from the beaker into the evaporating basin.

9. Gently heat the beaker until the solution in the evaporating basin has reduced by half.

10. Leave the evaporating basin to cool. Once cool, move the evaporating basin to a warm place where it will not be disturbed ( i.e. Window-sill ) and observe over the next few days. Blue copper sulfate crystals should form.

Observations: This was our results

Anti-vietnam war songs

Hello and welcome to my blog this blog is about me finding a song that Anti-Vietnam war. The song I chose was war what is it good for. In the green highlighter, I explained some parts of the song.

Lyrics

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for                 This is saying that war is not needed to make peace and it good for nothing
Absolutely nothing                 and Vietnam has been told to be the most useless war and that the war
War, huh, yeah                      wasn't worth it for what they lost.
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, why'all
War, huh, good god
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives                    These words from this part of the song show that
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes         the innocent lives that were killed still are affecting now
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh good god, why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
War, whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die, ah, war-huh, good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) it's got one friend that's the undertaker
Oh, war, has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for you tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it
huh good god why'all
What is it good for

Stand up and shout it nothing

Here is the song if you were interested I know a lot of people have heard this song.
