Year 10 writing Portfolio

Some writing I did in 2021 English

Is shylock a villain

What does the word ‘vindictive’ mean? Vindictive means when someone has a strong desire to seek revenge.

“When Antonio defaults on the loan, Shylock is vindictive, claiming he wants Antonio’s flesh for no practical reason other than spite.”

What is What is Anti-Semitism?

Anti-Semitism is discrimation towrads jews as rilgen and race.

What is one reason we should take pity on Shylock?

Because He is being treated badly because he is a jew and his daughter took all this money and ran away.

Sometimes a thing or an idea can be the antagonist in a story (we call this an abstract antagonist), rather than a person. For example corruption, jealousy, or disease. Based on the reading above, what is the thing/idea that could be considered the abstract antagonist in the Merchant of Venice?

Greed because throughout this story you can see that everyone wants something in this story.

Money because everyone wants it and not everyone can get it.

English essay

Essay Question: Describe at least one character or individual you could relate to in the text. Explain why it is important that you were able to relate to the character or individual.

“The secret life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber is a short story text the author intended for this text to show the way Walter mitty deals with his life in an adventurous way for the reader. This made Walter mitty relatable to me and the readers. This is because he was so bored he would imagine himself in interesting situations. Also not pay attention to his surroundings. This makes the text more interesting to read on a personal level.

This is shown in the story when Walter Mitty spaces out and does not pay attention Quote: “The Old Man’ll get us through,” they said to one another. “The Old Man ain’t afraid of Hell!” . . .

“Not so fast! You’re driving too fast!” said Mrs. Mitty. “What are you driving so fast for?” This means when he is imagining things he's unaware of his surroundings but also can be snapped back to reality. The author did this to make it more relatable to the reader. This made the reader feel closer to the text and more understanding rather than just reading a story. This happens to me when someone is speaking to me and I zone out and don't know what they're talking about.

Showing the reader an adventurous way of dealing with boredom. This makes the story more enjoyable for the reader of the text. This can be compared to this quote in the text: He picked up an old copy of Liberty and sank down into the chair. “Can Germany Conquer the World Through the Air?” Walter Mitty looked at the pictures of bombing planes and of ruined streets. . ..

“The cannonading has got the wind up in young Raleigh, sir,” said the sergeant.

This means Walter Mitty is boring, causing him to go off and imagine again but with the pictures in front of him. The author did this to bring the reader along on this adventure and make a vivid image of what was happening. This reminds me of picture puzzles ‘what do you see in the picture’ and using your imagination.

The final reason why it was important that I could relate to the character of Walter Mitty was that the character challenges the reader to question whether Mitty is doing the right thing by living in his head. This can be looked at in the text where “I don’t need overshoes,” said Mitty. ‘She put her mirror back into her bag. “We’ve been all through that,” she said, getting out of the car. “You’re not a young man any longer.” This means that Walter chose not to get but chose to space out instead showing the reader that he's not willing to do anything. This should make the reader think Walter is a relatable character but is he a good one. This idea is important because it shows two different views of a character.

In conclusion, an important character in the story was Walter mitty it was good that I could relate to this character for example when Walter Mitty spaces out and does not pay attention. An adventurous way of dealing with boredom. Mitty is doing the right thing by living in his head. I enjoyed this book because it got you thinking about the charter on what's right and wrong and your morals.
